Kevin Kuhne's interest in local history, architecture, people, and conservation inspires and motivates his art. He most enjoys working en plein air and captures the experience and excitement of being on site. His preferred medium is watercolor, which he states, "requires extensive value planning, design, and preliminary sketches, but results in the lively and spontaneous look that I aim for in the finished paintings." His teaching is an important impetus for his work, pushing him to constantly examine and explain the formal and technical problems of painting and design. Kevin Kunhe's work in the Regional Art Galleries features watercolor paintings that bring to life cityscapes, art galleries, quiet gardens, and scenes of the home in a vibrant and captivating way.
Susan Ann Lunow's favorite mediums are watercolor, graphite, and pen and ink. She notes, "a painting’s inspiration may come from a walk in the woods, the light shining through the trees, the sparkling reflections off the ripples in a stream, the ice forming along the edge of a river, or limbs of leafless trees being coated with ice. Animals often appear in my paintings, sometimes as a surprise, like a fox or deer hidden in the brush." She often sketches a scene on site with pencil or pen and ink. Then uses the sketch and photos she has taken to complete the painting in the studio. Her work on view in the Regional Art Galleries reflects this love of nature and the simple beauty of a walk in the woods.
Suzette Palmer Usher works mainly in water colors and en plein air. She is a largely self taught artist who has rediscovered her love of art after retiring from the medical field. Her work on view in the Regional Art Galleries features scenes from nature, everyday objects, and portraits. She states "seeing my art hang in the Arkell feels like I have come full circle back to my artistic roots in my beloved Canajoharie."
